Description

Known for their accuracy and attention to detail, Aoshima's precision Waterline Series focuses on naval ship models, depicting the ship's structure from the waterline and above. Models in this series are designed to be seen as if floating on the water, highlighting the above-water structure, whilst also making for a more practical and space-efficient display on a flat surface.

Amagi was the second aircraft carrier of the Unryū class, built at the Mitsubishi Nagasaki shipyard for the IJN (Imperial Japanese Navy), and completed in August 1944. The Unryū class represent the last purpose-built Japanese aircraft carrier construction of the Second World War.

Amagi and her sisters were built to a design modified from that of the earlier Hiryū; the improved design moved the bridge structure further forward, and included two funnels on the starboard side, angled below the horizontal, with a water-cooling system intended to reduce air turbulence.

Due to being completed late in the war, Amagi remained in Japanese waters and never embarked her full complement of aircraft. After sustaining damage from several American carrier-borne air raids in July 1945, despite being heavily camouflaged, she capsized whilst moored outside Kure port.

Aoshima's precision Waterline Series model kit shows Amagi as she would have looked after completion, and with her air wing embarked.
